US Embassy Warns Against Illegal Entry and Visa Misuse

Following the viral video of an Indian student being handcuffed at a US airport, the United States Embassy in India has issued a strong statement, warning prospective travelers and students about strict enforcement of immigration laws. The embassy emphasized that unauthorized entry, misuse of visas, and violations of U.S. law are taken seriously and will not be tolerated.

“The United States welcomes genuine travelers. However, visiting the U.S. is not a right—it is a privilege. We will not tolerate illegal entry or the abuse of our visa system,” the statement said.

The viral video sparked widespread concern, especially among Indian communities abroad. Many described the treatment of students at airports as harsh and emotionally distressing. One non-resident Indian (NRI) referred to the incidents as "a human tragedy", highlighting how students, some barely adults, are being subjected to legal action and deportation.

Social activist Kunal Jain noted that several Indian students are being stopped daily at US airports. “Some are being questioned for hours, handcuffed, and eventually sent back on return flights,” he said.

In response, the Consulate General of India in New York has confirmed that it is in contact with US authorities regarding such cases. Efforts are underway to ensure legal and humanitarian support for the affected students.

Important Advice for Students Traveling to the US:

  • Always apply for a student visa with honest documentation and accurate information.

  • Do not engage with unauthorized agents or fake admissions.

  • Avoid signing contracts or arrangements that are unclear or not legally vetted.

  • If stopped or detained, immediately request to speak with the Indian consulate.
